Trump Admin Turns Up the Heat on Columbia University with Consent Decree Talk

April 10, 2025The Trump administration is at it again, and this time, Columbia University’s in the crosshairs.

Word on the street—well, according to the Wall Street Journal just minutes ago—is that Team Trump is pushing for a consent decree to keep Columbia on a tight leash.

If you’re scratching your head wondering what that means, think of it as a legal babysitting contract: the government steps in, lays down the rules, and makes sure the university plays nice—or else. This isn’t a total shock.

Columbia’s been a punching bag for the administration since last year when they yanked $400 million in federal funding over claims the school didn’t do enough to shield Jewish students from antisemitism during those wild pro-Palestinian protests.

Columbia scrambled to comply—banning face masks, beefing up security’s arrest powers, and even shaking up its Middle East studies oversight. But apparently, that wasn’t enough to get the cash back. Now, it looks like the administration wants a formal deal, signed and sealed, to lock in their influence. What’s the endgame?

Some say Columbia’s a guinea pig in Trump’s bigger plan to whip higher education into shape—his shape, that is. With other Ivy League heavyweights like Harvard and Cornell already feeling the funding squeeze, a consent decree could be the next chess move to enforce compliance on everything from DEI programs to how campuses handle protests.

It’s less “academic freedom” and more “follow our lead.”No official docs are public yet, but if this WSJ scoop holds water, we might see Columbia under a microscope—and a court’s gavel—pretty soon. Stay tuned; this could get messy.Let me know if you’d like me to tweak it, expand it, or take a different angle!
